Method and caveats

Intentional homicides recorded by the police per 100,000 inhabitants, by region and province, following the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS). An offence is counted where it is reported, not where the victim or the offender lives. The rate is computed on residents: cities and tourist areas, with many commuters and visitors, show higher rates. Provinces follow the NUTS 2021 classification; in years when Eurostat uses other codes, as for Sardinia's provinces before 2023, the area has no value. For Italy the figure comes from the Ministry of the Interior through ISTAT.

These data count the offences reported to and recorded by the police, not every offence committed: some are never reported, and the share changes from offence to offence and over time. Offence definitions and recording practices differ from country to country, so the European comparison is sounder for homicides than for other offences. Rates are computed on the resident population.
