What it measures

Drug production, trafficking, dealing and possession offences recorded by the police, per 100,000 inhabitants. Version published by Eurostat on 16 May 2017, retrieved from a copy kept by the Internet Archive.

Methodology

Drug production, trafficking, dealing and possession offences recorded by the police, per 100,000 inhabitants, following the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS code 0601). They count reported and recorded offences, not all those committed. Offence definitions and recording practices differ by country: the comparison should be read with caution. For Italy the figure comes from the Ministry of the Interior through ISTAT. Eurostat computes no EU-27 value. For France the values up to 2015 and those from 2016 are not comparable: the rate goes from 11.25 to 362.98 per 100,000 inhabitants in one year. Eurostat flags no break in the series, but a change of this size points to a change in how these offences are classified or counted.
