What it measures

Prisoners with foreign citizenship as a percentage of all prisoners, computed from the values published by Eurostat. Version published by Eurostat on 10 July 2018, retrieved from a copy kept by the Internet Archive.

Methodology

Prisoners with foreign citizenship as a percentage of all prisoners, computed by Data Super Partes dividing the two values Eurostat publishes for the same year. It needs context: foreign prisoners include people without a residence permit, who are not counted among residents; people without a stable residence have less access to house arrest and to alternatives to prison; prisoners are mostly young men, and the foreign population is younger than the Italian one. The share of foreigners among residents is in the Foreign residents series of the Immigration topic. Germany does not publish prisoners' citizenship.
