What it measures

People held in prison, per 100,000 inhabitants. Version published by Eurostat on 10 January 2019, retrieved from a copy kept by the Internet Archive.

Methodology

People held in prison, awaiting trial or convicted, per 100,000 inhabitants, from prison administration data collected by Eurostat. The count refers to a single day of the year and excludes people serving their sentence outside prison. For Italy the source is the Department of Penitentiary Administration. Eurostat computes no EU-27 value.
