What it measures

Corruption offences, including bribery and embezzlement of public assets, recorded by the police, per 100,000 inhabitants. Version published by Eurostat on 29 April 2026.

Methodology

Corruption offences, including bribery and embezzlement of public assets, recorded by the police, per 100,000 inhabitants, following the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS code 0703). They count reported and recorded offences, not all those committed. Offence definitions and recording practices differ by country: the comparison should be read with caution. For Italy the figure comes from the Ministry of the Interior through ISTAT. Eurostat computes no EU-27 value. For Italy the 2016 value and those from 2017 are not comparable: the rate goes from 35.12 to 5.9 per 100,000 inhabitants in one year. Eurostat flags no break in the series, but a change of this size points to a change in how these offences are classified or counted.
