What it measures
Assaults causing serious injury recorded by the police, per 100,000 inhabitants. Version published by Eurostat on 29 April 2026.
Methodology
Assaults causing serious injury recorded by the police, per 100,000 inhabitants, following the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS code 020111). They count reported and recorded offences, not all those committed. Offence definitions and recording practices differ by country: the comparison should be read with caution. For Italy the figure comes from the Ministry of the Interior through ISTAT. Eurostat computes no EU-27 value. For Italy the values up to 2013 and those from 2014 are not comparable: the rate goes from 111.11 to 1.6 per 100,000 inhabitants in one year, and up to 2013 it equals the rate of all assaults (code 02011) that Eurostat publishes by region and province. Similar jumps occur in Germany between 2008 and 2009 and in Spain between 2009 and 2010. Eurostat flags no break in the series, but changes of this size point to a change in how these offences are classified or counted.

Crises
Conventional whole-year periods chosen by the editors; each period's source documents the event. They apply to every EU country. They show temporal coincidences, not causes.

Governments
Each government covers the period from its swearing-in to the end date given by governo.it. An annual figure is not attributed to a single government: the bands show who was in office during the period, as a temporal coincidence. For public spending, the budget law for year N is passed by the government in office in year N−1.
